About Lois Spangler

I started this site as an extension of a PhD that I eventually abandoned. The short version of things is that I’ve been a writer, editor, and RPG runner and player for most of my life, and this was going to be a place to elaborate on the nature of narrative, particularly the interactive kind. Maybe I’ll get back to posting stuff about that in future.

I practice historical European martial arts (HEMA), and more specifically, Iberian styles of sword combat, both vulgar and la verdadera destreza. I also have over 25 years of experience as a bilingual writer/editor, and I bring all of it to bear on 16th – 19th century Spanish and Portuguese fencing texts. If you’d like to support me in getting Pacheco’s Compendio (his highly edited version of Carranza’s Philosophy of Arms) into readable English (with additional explanatory notes and research), I invite you to visit my Patreon page.
